“I’ve spent the day thinking about this, and I think you should go back home for a little while.”

Over a forkful of pasta, I stared at Lana.

“Home?” I asked blankly.

“Ohio,” she said softly. “Back to where you lived with your mom. Visit her grave. See some of your old friends. That sort of thing. Although not that awful girl, Shonie.”

She made a face, clearly trying to get me to smile.

It didn’t work.

“Why would I go back there?” I asked, panic edging in. Had Marisa said something to her? “It’s not home anymore.”

“I know that.” Lana touched my hand. “Riley, look at me. You need some time yourself and you will not find any peace here. If you don’t want to go to Ohio, then...go somewhere. Take a vacation. Go someplace you’ve always wanted to go. Take a road trip if you want. But do something. You’re driving yourself crazy right now and it’s not healthy.”

The need to argue rose inside me.

Leave here? Leave Marisa?

She told you she needs time. What are you going to do? Pace the walls and swim yourself into exhaustion, waiting for her to call?

I shoved the fork full of lasagna into my mouth and chewed mechanically.

Scott, my former best friend, had texted me a few days ago, tentatively, Hey, how ya doin’ sort of thing.

I’d responded with a casual, fine, and you? response.

But now, suddenly, I realized I wanted to see him. Wanted to talk to somebody.

“Maybe I should,” I said, the words coming out as if they had to be dragged from my throat. “But what about my clients? Somebody had to make sure the studio doesn’t push Marisa back onto the set before she’s ready, and Eden—”

“Riley. It’s me you’re talking to,” Lana said with a faint smile.

“Alright.” I nodded and looked at Lana. “I’ll go back home. Maybe I’ll do the road trip thing, too. Drive out there. I always wanted to see more of the country.”

“Sounds lovely.” She sipped her wine. “I expect photos.”
